Originating from the seaside city of Salerno in the beautiful Campania region, Alessandro Marinaro is an LLM student with an impressive academic trajectory for someone of his age. After completing his Bachelor in Political Science from LUISS University in Rome, Alessandro pursued a Master in International Law at the Geneva Graduate Institute. He further expanded his education with a Master in Diplomacy from ISPI, Milan. His academic journey led him to an exchange semester at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Further enriching his profile, Alessandro gained also hands-on experience interning at the Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations System in Geneva.

Born into a family of law professors, he grew up in an environment imbued with legal discourses, but it was not until he discovered International Law that he realised that this was his path. The researcher-sized environment at the EUI, coupled with the renowned quality of its Law faculty and unparalleled focus on research, convinced Alessandro that the EUI was the perfect steppingstone for his next academic endeavour. Alessandro's research delves into the "supply side" of human rights strategic litigation through the case of Italian arms exports to Saudi Arabia in the context of the Yemen civil war. By analysing the experience of NGOs engaged in strategic litigation against European arms suppliers to the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemen, Alessandro is keen to investigate how relational dynamics between social actors influence human rights litigation strategies.

Looking ahead, Alessandro aims not merely to add to the academic discourse but to shape long-term policies. Fascinated by the world of diplomacy, international organisations, and academia, he hopes that the LLM at the EUI will place him at the nexus where these domains converge.

Besides law, sport plays a prominent role in Alessandro's life. He loves tennis, track, and football, and he even worked as a journalist for several tennis magazines. Additionally, he is an avid reader, music enthusiast, creative writer, and enjoys travelling.

The Law Department is delighted to welcome Alessandro to the EUI community. We are confident that the EUI will nurture his talent and be the springboard to realise his aspirations.
