Luca Tenreira is a French Master of Laws (LLM) student hailing from the beautiful city of Toulouse.
He started his educational journey with a two-year post-bachelor course designed specifically to prepare students for the highly competitive École Normale Supérieure (ENS) entrance exam. After securing a spot at ENS, he specialised in European Law, Transnational Environmental Law, and Social Sciences.
Beyond academics, Luca took the lead as the President of the Law Research Society, organising 'The Anthropocene's conferences: new objects and methods of research' with esteemed figures from diverse professions, such as judges, arbitrators, and economists. He was also a civil servant trainee for the Ministry of Higher Education and a research assistant on global and transnational environmental law. His involvement in various projects such as 'Environmental Justice: Science-based Decisions', 'Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence: A European Model for Business', and 'Effectiveness of the Ecological Transition Through Law: A Transdisciplinary Approach' showcases his commitment to addressing pressing legal issues.
So, what drove Luca to the field of law? In his words, it was the "diplomatic" potential of law to bring together different knowledge spheres to address society's challenges, especially regarding environmental and social crises. The EUI's reputation as a hub for transdisciplinary, critical, and diverse approaches to law prompted him to choose the Law Department. He also saw it as an opportunity to join a community, build friendships, and learn from individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds.
His research revolves around the regulation of global value chains, focusing on the obligations placed on transnational companies concerning the environment. Using the prism of Science & Technology Studies (STS), his work seeks to analyse corporate transition policies and evaluate their efficacy in addressing the environmental crisis. His ambition is to end corporate misconduct within global value chains and ensure companies are accountable for environmental and human rights abuses. Looking ahead, Luca envisions a career dedicated to academia, firmly believing that the EUI offers the optimal training ground for moulding a "scientific mind".
Beyond research, he plans to keep his passion for rowing alive by joining the Società Canottieri of Florence. He also enjoys long hikes in nature and has been trying to learn surfing. He is far from being a pro surfer, but he is not giving up!
We warmly welcome Luca and look forward to the innovative insights his research will undoubtedly bring to our community.
