Emphasising the strong performance of recent years and consolidating its status among the world's leading institutions, the ShanghaiRanking 2025 rewards the EUI's outstanding research and innovative teaching, placing it 6th in the world in this prestigious ranking.
ShanghaiRanking is a highly respected independent global ranking system for universities. Its Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) evaluates institutions in different disciplines using a rigorous, transparent, and data-based methodology.
Maintaining a place in the world's top 10 is an important institutional endorsement and reflects the high quality of research, academic excellence, and scientific commitment shown by the EUI community, and in particular by the faculty and scholars of the Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS). It is a tribute to the strength, visibility, and impact of the department and its contributors.
"This result highlights the strength of political science across the EUI," noted Prof Arnout van de Rijt, Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences. "Political scientists in the Department of Political and Social Sciences, the Robert Schuman Centre, the School of Transnational Governance and the Max Weber Programme together all contribute to an exceptional environment for top research and outstanding graduate training.”
The EUI’s ranking in political sciences significantly improved over the last three years, and it is now the best since 2017, when Shanghai ranking adopted the current, refined methodology.
“While recognising that academic rankings can only tell part of the story, we are proud that our PhD researchers develop their talents and skills at an institution that ranks top in the European Union, and among the very best in the world", explained Professor Filip Kostelka, Director of Graduate Studies at the EUI. "The ranking attests to the ambition, impact, and methodological rigor of political science research at the Institute”, concluded Kostelka.
The EUI warmly congratulates all its faculty, researchers, and staff on this achievement. Their dedication to unique research, teaching, and public engagement continues to enhance the Institute's standing and influence on the global stage.
