The Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG) at the European University Institute is proud to announce the addition of two experts to its faculty within the Climate team: Joanna Pandera and Simone Tagliapietra. Both bring a wealth of expertise in European and global energy and climate policy, further strengthening the STG’s commitment to advancing innovative solutions to address the pressing challenges of climate change.
Dr. Joanna Pandera, founder and CEO of Forum Energii, Poland’s leading think tank on energy transition, has been at the forefront of European energy and climate policy. With a focus on electricity and heating markets, renewable energy, and European regulations, Dr. Pandera has made a significant impact in shaping the debate around energy transition in Poland and beyond. Her previous roles include Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Environment during the Polish Presidency of the EU Council, and she has held positions at German and Danish energy organisations such as Agora Energiewende and Oersted.
“I am thrilled to join the team at such a pivotal time, as the EU’s new energy and climate agenda takes shape. I believe my experience in policy development and implementation on energy and climate issues in Central and Eastern Europe will be a valuable asset as we tackle the important work ahead within the EU. In this time of rapid change, it will be crucial to ensure public understanding, as well as a fair distribution of costs across regions and consumer groups. Achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets and defining new international cooperation in the context of growing economic competition will be the key for the years to come.”
Dr. Simone Tagliapietra, Senior Fellow at Bruegel and Professor of EU Energy and Climate Policy at The Johns Hopkins University – School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Europe, is a renowned scholar and policy expert on global decarbonisation and the political economy of climate change. With numerous publications in top academic journals including Nature and Science, Dr. Tagliapietra’s expertise spans both the academic and policy-making arenas. He is also the author of Global Energy Fundamentals (2020) and co-author of The Macroeconomics of Decarbonisation (2024). His various advisory appointments, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Clean Air Task Force (CATF), make him a leading voice in global climate governance.
“I am happy to join the STG Climate Team at a time of profound and rapid changes in the EU climate policy space. The last five years have seen Europe structuring the most ambitious climate policy architecture at the global level. The next five years will have to see the concrete implementation of what has been agreed, and new urgent actions to address its social and industrial dimensions - starting with a solid Clean Industrial Deal. Under the leadership of Prof. Delbeke, STG Climate is at the frontier of these issues, and I hope that my contribution could further increase its impact at this critical time.”
