Biography

Angelika Adensamer is a legal scholar focusing on fundamental rights and the rule of law in face of the digitalisation of public administration. She completed her PhD at the University of Graz as part of the DiGrenz (Digitalisation of Asylum Procedures) project. Her dissertation on legal protection against algorithms in asylum procedures analysed the challenges that algorithmic evidence poses for effective remedies in asylum law and received the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) Award for Migration Studies.

She has worked in interdisciplinary research projects, including Elastic Borders at the University of Graz and Policing the Pandemic at the Vienna Centre for Societal Security (VICESSE). She has published on algorithms in asylum procedures and other administrative areas, state surveillance and digital rights. Beyond academia, she has worked in digital rights advocacy, political institutions, and public engagement, experiences that inform her interest in the relationship between technological change, state power, and individual rights. She holds a law degree from the University of Vienna and an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford.

At the European University Institute, she will investigate how the EU’s interoperability architecture, which links migration and law enforcement databases, affects accountability mechanisms, access to legal remedies, and the protection of fundamental rights.
