Biography

Christine Neuhold is Professor of EU Democratic Governance at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) at Maastricht University (UM). She is a political scientist by training, with a doctorate from the University of Vienna. At FASoS she has taken on taken on different managerial roles; reaching from Head of the Politics department (2015-2019) to Dean (2020-2026).

Her research focus is on accountability within networked systems of multi-level governance and the evolving dynamics of EU institutions. Leadership in this domain is evidenced by the co-coordination of two European Union Initial Training networks, involving partnerships across multiple European universities. Teaching efforts have focused on the transforming EU system of governance and democratic representation at all levels of higher education. This expertise has been shared through the training of civil servants at institutions such as the European Institute for Public Administration, Clingendael, and the European Law Academy in Trier.

She has been an external lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy/Vienna School of International Studies (2001-2019) and a Visiting Lecturer at the Centre of European Integration Studies, University of Bonn. She was Visiting Fellow at the Institute of European Studies (IES), Berkeley, University of California (2011).

During her stay at the STG she will focus on different dimensions of EU democratic resilience. While this concept of democratic resilience has become a buzz word, both in policy circles and in academia, it requires further theoretical development and empirical assessment in relation to the EU’s multi-level and transnational system of governance. Christine would like to contribute to this debate, together with scholars at the EUI (and beyond).
