Biography

Ioanna’s research lies at the intersection of political sociology, political behaviour, and gender. The question that underpins most of her work is: how do inequalities at the household level condition women’s political engagement? She answers this question across a variety of empirical contexts and using a range of methodologies, including fieldwork as well as the collection of original survey, micro-level qualitative, and historical administrative data. Her dissertation draws on novel data from Zambia to explore how, when faced with patriarchal constraints, women attempt to assert political agency using tools in the private sphere of the home.

Ioanna obtained a PhD in Political Science from University College London. During her PhD, she was an Economic and Social Research Council scholar and a Next Economy Trust fellow. Before joining UCL, she completed an MPhil in Comparative Government at the University of Oxford (Nuffield College) and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Warwick.

During the Max Weber fellowship, Ioanna will employ historical data to explore gender power relations – especially in the realm of marriage and land inheritance practices – in early-20th century Greece. More broadly, she is interested in the formation of women’s political agency in the Balkans.
