Biography

Jonas Wieschollek is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge (Queens’ College). His dissertation offers the first in-depth examination of international law in Russia’s conquest of Central Asia (1850–1910s) and contributes to the global history of international law, imperialism, and colonialism. Beyond international law and legal history, his (evolving) research interests include comparative law, migration, legal theory, and postcolonial studies.

Jonas was trained as a lawyer and a philologist in Berlin, Freiburg (both Germany), St. Petersburg (Russia), and Krakow (Poland) and received a law degree (First State Examination) and an BA/MA from the University of Freiburg. For several years, he provided legal counseling for migrants and taught migration law and social law in Germany.

At the EUI, Jonas plans to revise his dissertation into a book and develop new research projects. He looks forward both to the mentorship from the Department of Law and the interdisciplinary conversations within the Max Weber Programme about imperialism and peripheralization that will help him contextualise the findings of his PhD research.

When not leafing through historical law journals or absconding into archives, Jonas relishes the world’s cultural diversity by listening to multilingual pop music. He enjoys learning languages and looks forward to engaging with the EUI’s international community.
