Biography
Juan Pedro Navarro Martínez is a historian specialising in social history, with a particular focus on gender, sexuality, and justice in the Early Modern period. Before joining the EUI, he was a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher at the University of Barcelona. Previously, he was a research fellow at the Academia de España in Rome (AECID) and held an FPU pre-doctoral position at the University of Murcia. He has also been a visiting lecturer and researcher at the universities of Leeds, Buenos Aires, and La Sapienza, as well as the EHESS (Marseille).
Juan Pedro holds a PhD in History from the University of Murcia (Extraordinary Doctorate Prize, 2023). His research centres on the social and judicial repression of non-normative sexualities, the construction of masculinity in the Mediterranean, and forms of sexual violence. His monograph, Destruyendo Sodoma: la represión social y judicial del pecado nefando en Castilla a finales del Antiguo Régimen (2024), offers a pioneering analysis of same-sex sexual offences within civil courts.
During his Max Weber fellowship, Juan Pedro will expand his research into the repression of counter-masculine models in the Early Modern Mediterranean, with particular attention to the Hispanic Monarchy, Italy, and Provence. His work examines 18th-century legal structures to understand social perceptions of gender and sexuality, positioning experiences of sexual mobility at the centre of historiographical debate as a strategic resource in both judicial and social contexts.
