Biography

Luca Cinciripini is a Research Fellow in the “EU, Politics and Institutions” and “Energy, Climate and Resources” programmes at the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) in Rome. His research focuses on EU foreign and security policy, EU–UK relations, Arctic governance, inter-organisational relations and climate security.

Before joining IAI, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at University College London in 2021 and at the University of Edinburgh in 2022. He has also worked as an Associate Fellow at the Catholic University of Milan on security-related issues and has professional experience in journalism and communications.

He holds a PhD from the Catholic University, where his thesis examined EU–NATO interaction within the European defence regime. He graduated in Law from LUISS Guido Carli and completed a first-level Master’s degree in International Relations at ASERI (Alta Scuola di Economia e Relazioni Internazionali of the Catholic University).

As a Visiting Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance, working with Fabrizio Tassinari, he will examine how the EU and NATO contribute to the construction of the European defence regime. His research will focus particularly on legal practices and informal legal instruments, seeking to bridge international relations and international law and to move beyond approaches that analyse legal and political dynamics separately. The fellowship will contribute to the development of a broader monograph based on his PhD research, forthcoming in the book series Trends and Perspectives in International Politics.
