Biography

Maciej Zuziak is a computer scientist and legal scholar working at the intersection of data-protection law and privacy technology. His research spans privacy-enhancing technologies and AI safety, ranging from position papers on contemporary data governance to applied privacy-aware machine learning algorithms and formal security guarantees. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pisa in 2025, having spent the preceding four years as a researcher at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), and most recently held a Research Fellowship at the University of Leeds. His work has appeared at venues such as IEEE Big Data, ACM FAccT, and the Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PoPETs).

As a Max Weber Fellow, his work is organised around a thesis that law and privacy technology must co-evolve, and that well-designed regulation can act as an engine for new privacy-enhancing techniques, while regulation unsupported by adequate technical infrastructure tends to fall short of its own aims. He is interested in probing both sides of this claim: how legislation might drive technical innovation, and where, as with initiatives such as EuroStack, the absence of enabling technology limits what regulation can achieve. He is also interested in carrying the same approach into the domain of multi-agent safety, asking how data-subject anonymity might become a standalone object of protection rather than a by-product of other safeguards and designing frameworks that can empirically evaluate the safety of such systems.
