Biography
Michalis Moutselos is Assistant Professor of Politics at the University of Cyprus. He received his PhD in Political Science from Princeton University and was subsequently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen, where he also led the Max Planck Research Group The New Guards: Re-bordering the Southeast Mediterranean in an Age of Migration. His research lies at the intersection of comparative politics, political sociology and European integration, with a particular focus on migration, ethnic diversity, political behaviour, border governance and EU institutions. His recent work examines the role of European agencies in migration governance, contested borders and the implementation of the EU's New Pact on Migration and Asylum, alongside comparative research on state coercion and enforced disappearance.
During his stay at the European University Institute's School of Transnational Governance, he is developing a comparative project on the domestic governance of irregular migration, examining why democratic states with strong administrative capacity often adopt different approaches to managing irregular migrant populations despite facing similar political and economic pressures. His work has appeared in leading international journals including Governance, Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Political Geography, Social Forces and Ethnic and Racial Studies.
