Research project Consumer protection during the gas phase-out The European Union aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, which requires phasing out fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources. This transition will create financial challenges for households still connected to the gas network. As the number of users declines, the fixed costs of maintaining the infrastructure will be shared among fewer consumers, potentially leading to higher network charges. Ensuring a fair and socially equitable transition necessitates the development and implementation of robust regulatory measures aimed at minimising financial burdens and preventing disproportionate impacts on consumers. The research study focuses on assessing the financial impact of the gas phase-out on households in France and Spain. It aims to quantify the potential costs for consumers and provide recommendations for regulatory measures at national and EU levels to ensure strong consumer protection and support a fair and equitable transition.
