Diplomatic Intimacies: Asia in Indian Womens' Postcolonial Thought

This project has received funding via the EUI ESR call 2026, dedicated to Early Stage Researchers.

The idea of Asia changes from where and who conceptualizes it and is not limited to mere cartographical logics. The focus of this study is to interrogate this shape-shifting idea of Asia and understand how it expanded and contracted in the early years of postcolonial Indian internationalism, in the age of decolonisation.

DI-APT will explain this evolving phenomenon by interrogating ‘Asia’ through diplomatic intimacies, embodied and performed by anti-imperial Indian women leaders - the forgotten actors of global diplomatic history. In this excavation, the project will primarily rely on historical documents held across archives in UK, Geneva and India.
