Biographical Note


Raffaella A. Del Sarto is Associate Professor of Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), SAIS Europe in Bologna. She is currently a Robert Schuman Fellow at the EUI’s Robert Schuman Centre, where she is completing a monograph on EU-Middle East relations (under contract with OUP). From October 2011 to March 2019 she was a pat-time professor at the EUI’s Robert Schuman Centre: she first directed the research project ‘BORDERLANDS: Boundaries, Governance, and Power in the European Union’s Relations with North Africa and the Middle East,’ funded by the European Research Council (ERC) (2011-2017). Subsequently she was a consortium member of the MENARA research project (‘Middle East and North Africa Regional Architecture’), funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 program. Previous to this, she was a Research Fellow in Israel and Mediterranean Studies at St Antony’s College, Middle East Centre, University of Oxford (2007-2011), a Marie Curie Fellow (2005-2007) and a Jean Monnet Fellow (2004-2005) at the EUI’s Robert Schuman Centre, and a lecturer at the University of Bologna (2004-2005).

Raffaella Del Sarto holds a PhD in International Relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During the Oslo peace process in the late 1990s, she worked as a project manager with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Jerusalem, managing a German government fund in support of selected projects of Palestinian NGOs.

Research Interests


Her research interests include the politics and international relations of the Middle East as well as Europe’s relations with North Africa and the Middle East. She has also published on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the politics and regional relations of Israel, and EU policies towards Israel and the Palestinian territories. An additional research interest is International Relations theory, with a particular focus on the domestic-foreign policy nexus as well as the link between borders, power, and interdependence.
