Purpose

Description

The historical study of politics has undergone a profound reconfiguration, characterised not only by a broadening of its thematic and geographical boundaries but also by a refocusing on the actors involved. One of the most traditional areas in historiography, in fact, has shown a remarkable capacity for renewal. The seminar aims to analyse the impact that the ‘cultural turn’ has had on the historical study of politics, prompting greater attention to language, narratives, symbols, communication and circulation, emotions and memory, but also, increasingly, to practices, activism and very tangible forms of political participation. The cultural perspective has helped to re-conceptualise the political sphere by broadening its scope and devoting attention to the informal dynamics of politics and political participation as parts of everyday life. To address these issues, the seminar will look at both theoretical perspectives and numerous case studies, which will also be presented by a number of guests currently engaged in new research on the political history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
