Description
What does it mean to de-centre Europe in our research and professional practice? Can we write a global history, a colonial and imperial history that is not centered on European archives and analytical categories? This seminar takes up a range of questions in which we grapple with why such a de-centring is imperative and what the stakes are for distinct kinds of scholarship. Does historical research pose particular obstacles – as well as particular potential – for reformulating knowledge and action outside/beyond/against Eurocentric perspectives? We will pursue a range of methods for doing history ‘otherwise’ – displacing Eurocentrism with global and feminist perspectives, post- and de-colonial approaches, alternative archival ideologies, and in distinct realms of research (legal history, history of capitalism, gender history).
While this seminar is primarily concerned with history and historical method, we draw on approaches from (and relevant to) other disciplines, and warmly welcome participants from other departments.
Practical Matters :
Each week, one or two researchers will be tasked with introducing the week’s readings and guiding the initial discussion, linking the readings between weeks and integrating any additional material from their own research (or from suggested readings).
The seminar will feature a workshop in the eighth week of our meetings, in which three or four visitors from outside the EUI will discuss their ongoing research and professional activities in light of ‘decentring Europe,’ giving researchers the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge contributions to the field from a range of institutions and perspectives. Finally, we conclude with a researcher-led session organized around additional themes – or individual research – that enhance and conclude our collective discussions.
