Description
This seminar introduces researchers to the current state-of-the field of the History of Science, History of Medicine, History of Technology, each defined capaciously (e.g. ‘science’ includes the social sciences). It extends to Science and Technology Studies (STS) and the History of Knowledge, and may also consider fields such as Integrated History and Philosophy of Science, Medical Humanities and Health Humanities.
The seminar will be co-created with its participants. We will experiment with traditional and novel methods for navigating the scholarly landscape, ranging from scholarly journals, academic monographs, and textbooks to the new ‘short’ books, blogs, and substacks. At the initial meeting, each of us will briefly introduce our research topic and share our expectations for the seminar. By the end of the second session, we will have agreed the range of topics that we wish to cover and collectively assembled the readings that will be our focus in the remaining five sessions. Ultimately, the seminar aims to support its participants in producing a conceptual ‘toolkit’ for each of their research projects. Throughout the seminar, participants will be encouraged to reflect on the ways in which paper, digital, and AI technologies shape how we, as historians, search, read, and think.
Please bring your laptop to the first meeting.
