Description

Starting from the premise that “the condition of globality has always been organized locally,” (Geyer/Bright) this seminar approaches cities as material, legal, and socio-cultural settings for the articulation of global processes (e.g. capitalist urbanization, state/empire-building, migration, energy transitions, etc.). Within this broad remit, this class has two aims. First, to introduce and grapple collectively with key theoretical and methodological approaches to the city and the urban, approaches that have placed the city at the core of the theory and experience of modernity. Second, to survey cutting-edge historical scholarship on the global aspects of cities (and the urban aspects of global processes), assessing how far we can stretch the story of cities and the urban experience. We will build on an interdisciplinary literature drawn from urban social science but concentrating on urban and global history. Researchers will be responsible for introducing the readings/visitors of each of the weekly sessions and starting our collective discussion.
