Description
Recent international and European crises have placed ‘economic sovereignty’ and ‘geopolitical power’ at the heart of political debates. Or have they? In fact, Europeans have grappled with these problems before, whether in the midst of the interwar crises or after Suez in 1956, after the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in 1971 or that of the Berlin Wall. In all policy remits that pertain to the European Union and its predecessors, European policymakers have toyed with the idea that ‘Europe’ — whatever it means — should, to put it simply, develop its own economic and financial instruments and become more assertive on the international stage. This seminar will interrogate and historicise this quest, the evolution of the concepts used to refer to it, and the implications it has for our understanding of European cooperation and integration from the twentieth century to the present.
