Description
There are lively debates today on the complicity of law in contemporary capitalism and law’s possible roles in overcoming it. Critics of contemporary racial capitalism emphasise the entanglement of racism and capitalism. Legal institutionalists claim a constitutive role of law in capitalism. Marxists advocate a renewed materialism. Law and Political Economy (LPE) calls for a normative commitment to a more egalitarian and democratic society.
This seminar will centre, in particular, four specific current/recent debates, on:
1. Law and racial capitalism today
2. Law and historical materialism today
3. Marxist approaches to EU law
4. What role for law in moving beyond capitalism
The seminar aims to be equally welcoming to researchers from other EUI departments.
In order to receive credits or an attendance certificate for visitors, participants must attend at least 80% of the classes. Participation is in person only, with exceptions granted only in justified cases and subject to prior approval.
