Description
Overview
This seminar is a collaborative effort to assess the limits of the current human rights framework and reflect on its potential for development. The seminar does so by initially discussing the implicit or explicit assumptions and conditions underpinning the human rights framework, such as the notion of universality, the public and private divide, and the differentiation between civil and political rights and social, economic and cultural rights. We will then devote three sessions to review how this framework has been challenged by, and how it has reacted to, a number of phenomena of growing importance. Through the themes of increasing migration flows, recent armed conflicts, a new role for private actors and technology, and climate change, we will assess the efforts that have been made so far to stretch, amend, or rethink the current human rights framework. In the last session, we aim to jointly consider, based on the previous thematic sessions and the participants’ individual projects, the following questions: (1) What is or has been the evolutionary trajectory of human rights? (2) What are human rights today, that were not in 1948? (3) What is the unexplored potential of human rights?
Learning objectives
- Reflect on human rights dimensions in doctoral projects.
- Collectively consider and appreciate the limits and opportunities of the current human rights framework.
