Purpose

This seminar aims to do three things: (1) understand how to read research papers “in-depth”, by dissecting the data analysis and estimation methods in recent papers in empirical political science; (2) learn about the replication process, and enable researchers to replicate research in R and Stata; and (3) help researchers to set up their own data files for replication, in preparation for journal submission.  Each week we will read and work through the replication files (from Dataverse) of two recent papers in top journals in political science (e.g. APSR, AJPS, JOP, CPS, and BJPS).  There will also be two group exercises (in weeks 5 and 10), where teams of researchers will re-estimate and extend the results from one of the papers we have discussed (or another top paper), for example by changing the model estimations or conducting further robustness tests.  This seminar will be an opportunity for first year researchers to apply the empirical methods they have learned in the first term, and for researchers in subsequent years to practice their empirical estimation skills.
