Purpose

Foundations of Development is designed to introduce graduate students to issues in the study of political and economic development. We survey a broad range of different literatures and topics. The course is not comprehensive but rather serves as an introduction to especially lively areas of research, including the political impact of economic growth, democratization, ethnic conflict, migration, corruption, and political responsiveness. Although the course focuses on contemporary developing countries in the world, it also incorporates some historical material from the developed world. Students with specific research topics in mind should contact the instructor in summer prior to discuss whether the syllabus can be adjusted to incorporate their interests.
