Purpose
This workshop introduces participants to the tools and techniques of automated data collection for social research using R. Designed for social scientists seeking to expand their methodological toolkit, the course focuses on how automation can unlock new forms of empirical inquiry by providing access to novel, unstructured, or previously hard-to-reach data sources. Participants will learn how to interact with online databases, gather data from web pages, and retrieve information through APIs, developing skills that enable researchers to build, manage, and maintain their own research data systems. The sessions will emphasize how these methods can amplify theoretically driven research by allowing scholars to capture social phenomena and generate rich data infrastructures for analysis. While some prior programming experience may be advantageous, it is not a strict requirement for participation.
