Description
This course critically examines the role of knowledge and evidence in policymaking, with a focus on transnational governance. Students will explore the nature and politics of knowledge: what counts as evidence, how it is generated and validated, and how it shapes public decision-making processes.
The course begins by introducing the foundations of evidence-informed policymaking, including institutional and actor-centered constraints. Students then examine inclusive knowledge practices with Prof. Rubio-MarĂn, focusing on the broadening of epistemic inputs in policy formulation.
Prof. Voss addresses the legal dimensions of knowledge use, particularly in judicial review, and introduces the concept of risk. Dr. Sucha emphasizes the role of evidence in evaluating policy outcomes across sectors, while Dr. Taffoni explores anticipatory governance and the integration of foresight into policymaking. Karina Miranda (PhD researcher at the EUI) facilitates a discussion on the evolving role of official statistics in informing policy-making.
The course concludes with a simulation-based exercise on glyphosate regulation, allowing students to apply theoretical insights in a practical, policy-relevant scenario.
