Impact of Covid-19 on the Czech Academic Job Market in the Social Sciences and Humanities

Currently, the academic labour market does not seem to have been strongly affected by the Covid-19 crisis. On the universities web pages there is no specific information on new hiring.

The deadlines for open position calls were not affected by the Covid-19 crisis. However, most of the calls in May to June 2020 were related to Life Sciences rather than the Social Sciences and the Humanities.

Responses adopted by the Government and the National Funding Agency

  • The Czech Science Foundation has not announced any changes on its website, concerning grant deadlines [1]: https://gacr.cz/en/important-terms-and-deadlines-2/

[1] Before the Covid-19 situation, announcements of public tenders in research, experimental development and innovation for the support of grant projects in basic research usually takes place in the spring of the respective calendar year (usually at the turn of February and March). Tender period was the same for all public tenders, starting the day after the announcement of public tender and lasting a maximum 43 calendar days.
The evaluation period is the period during which the provider carries out evaluation of the project proposals, and decides on the results of the tender. The evaluation period starts the day following the end of the tender period and lasts a maximum 240 calendar days.
Announcements of the results of the tender take place after the evaluation of project proposals, generally in December of the same calendar year the public tender was announced. The expected date for launching of the projects is always 1 January of the year following the announcement of the tender.
