Biography

Margarita Petrova is an assistant professor at IBEI where she teaches courses in International Relations, International Security, and Peace Processes and Conflict Resolution.
She holds a PhD degree in Government from Cornell University (2007) and her doctoral thesis, entitled 'Leadership Competition and the Creation of Norms: A Cross-National Study of Weapons Restrictions' was awarded the 2008 Helen Dwight Reid award for best dissertation in international relations, law and politics from the American Political Science Association.
Her main interests are in the area of international norm development, ethical and legal issues in international relations, security studies, and transnational activism and NGO advocacy.
Currently, she is working on a book manuscript 'The Politics of Norm Creation: State Leadership and NGO Partnerships in Curbing the Weapons of War' and projects exploring the role of arguing and bargaining in international negotiations and the development of 'norm cascades' in international humanitarian law.
