Biography

Chiara Destri completed her PhD in Political Studies (specialization Political Theory) at the University of Milan, Italy, with a dissertation offering a prudential justification of the legitimate authority of democracy.Her broad research interests cover normative theories of citizenship and democracy, especially in its deliberative and epistemic forms, issues of political legitimacy, authority and obligation, modern and contemporary social contract theories and the debate between ideal and non-ideal theory. Chiara’s current research project at the EUI focuses on the development of a diversified theory of political obligation for democratic citizens and for political parties within the deliberative context. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris.Chiara is interested in teaching courses on the justification of democracy, on deliberative and epistemic democracy, on social contract theories and on political legitimacy and obligation.
