Biography

Fabian Mushövel is a political economist completing his PhD in European political economy at the London School of Economics. During his PhD he held visiting scholar positions at the Economics Department at UC Berkeley and the Government Department at Harvard University. He has worked previously as a consultant for Chatham House and analyst at the Centre for Economic Performance.

His research focuses on matters of economic inequality and redistribution as well as the politics of the welfare state and its reform, both in Europe and other advanced capitalist democracies. At the LSE, Fabian was part of the International Inequalities Institute’s Leverhulme Doctoral Programme. In his dissertation, Fabian assessed the distributive effects of austerity measures and structural reforms during the Eurozone crisis, with a particular focus on how the involvement of non-majoritarian institutions affects how the burden of adjustment is distributed among different social groups.

In his Max Weber Fellowship, Fabian’s research centres around welfare state reforms in advanced capitalist democracies in the post-2008 era. Specifically, he looks at how modern welfare states change in the face of limited fiscal space and increased contestation among the electorate.

Fabian has taught undergraduate level seminars at LSE in ‘capitalism, democracy and equality’, and ‘the politics of economic policy’, for which he won a teaching excellence award.
