Biography

Sonali Chowdhry is an economist with research interests in international trade and firm heterogeneity. Her work examines the reallocation effects of trade policy shocks using detailed transactions-level customs databases. During the Max Weber Fellowship, she will be constructing a novel database on international trade networks in order to examine ‘two-sided’ heterogeneity within firm-to-firm relationships.

Alongside research papers, Sonali has actively contributed to multiple policy reports on mega-regional free trade agreements and served as an external consultant for government agencies such as the European Parliament and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Her research has also been covered by leading news outlets including Bloomberg, Reuters, Der Spiegel and Die Zeit.

Sonali pursued her PhD in Economics as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. She also worked as a Junior Economist specialising in trade policy with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the Ifo Institute’s Center for International Economics. Prior to her PhD, Sonali read for the MPhil in Economics from University of Oxford as a recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship from India.
