Biography

So Yeon Kim is an international lawyer with her primary interests on the law of the sea and international environmental law. She studied her PhD in Law at the University of Cambridge. Her thesis, 'Marine Protected Areas and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea', explores the law and practice of five selected Marine Protected Areas. Beyond the focus of her thesis, she is also interested in public international law in general, international human rights law, third world approaches to international law, international humanitarian law, and international relations. Her works are published in International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, Journal of the History of International Law, Legal Studies, and so forth. Prior to her PhD, she studied at the University of Edinburgh for her LLM. So Yeon also holds a BA and MA in Political Science from Yonsei University, South Korea.

During her Max Weber Fellowship, So Yeon's research concerns the intersection of animal welfare and the law of the sea. The law of the sea has viewed aquatic animals as resources. The consequence of this is unsustainable aquaculture. Her research will question this archaic perspective by questioning the assumption of the law of the sea.

So Yeon has taught postgraduate courses on public international law in general, including the law of the sea and international environmental law at Cambridge.
