Posted on 05 June 2019
Four series within the private archives of Alcide de Gasperi are now available for consultation at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence. These 939 paper files present a major archival resource for the research of Italian and European 20th century history.

Within the Alcide De Gasperi archives, these 939 archival files are structured under the following sub-headings.

The first sub-fonds concerns alphabetically arranged personal and official correspondence, covering the years 1903 to 1956 (642 files). The second sub-fonds contains the Francesco Bartolotta diaries detailing De Gasperi’s institutional activities from 1944 to 1954 (254 files). The third part contains the Rodolfo Arata papers (1947 – 1975) with 5 files, and the last part comprises the Paolo Canali collection (1931–1951) with 18 paper files.

A separate collection of newspaper articles written and published by the daughter of Alcide De Gasperi, Maria Romana De Gasperi, between 1998 and 2001, has also been made available (8 files).

A detailed and analytic inventory has been prepared in Italian which respects the original arrangement of the files.

Consultation rules are consistent with the rest of the De Gasperi papers and are available in the introduction to the fonds under “Conditions of Access and Use”. In particular, the consultation request has to be authorised by the depositor of the papers. For any supplementary information please refer to the HAEU.
