New poster collection on European integration history

Posted on 11 December 2019

The poster collection of Nicola Di Gioia (NDG) was processed by HAEU archivists and is now open for consultation, both on the HAEU premises and online. The NDG collection consists of the audio-visual material collected by Nicola Di Gioia, who served as a European Commission officer at the DG for Education and Culture of the European Commission in Rome from 1962 to 2003. Previously kept in Rome, the collection was generously deposited at the HAEU by his son Fabio Di Gioia in July 2018.

The collection constitutes an important element of the iconographic heritage of the European integration process. Indeed, the material, made up of 1045 paper posters produced from 1957 to 2003 mostly by EU institutions, reflects the efforts made towards the promotion of events and awareness campaigns on various socio-economic and educational issues at the European level. Among others, the collection includes posters pertaining to the European Parliament’s election campaigns, to the Erasmus programme, to the introduction of the Euro in 2002, to scientific research and technological achievements in the Community, to EU external relations, and to environmental protection in Europe. Also included are posters promoting European identity through values, symbols, exhibitions, conferences, concerts, and anniversaries of key dates such as the Schuman Declaration and the Treaty of Rome, as well as posters promoting fundamental and social rights such as freedom, (gender) equality, employment, and fight against racism.

The collection of posters was classified following a thematic approach and described at item level. The posters were digitised and are consultable digitally on the HAEU database.
