New Institutional Files: 1982 European Economic and Social Committee (CES)

Posted on 27 January 2020
The historical archives of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) for the year 1982 (vol. 24) are now available for consultation at the HAEU.

Documents were transferred from Brussels and an inventory is available online. Documents are consultable in the HAEU reading room after user registration and according to the thirty-year rule governing access to EU institutional documents.

The volume for the year 1982 adds to the current fonds of the Economic and Social Committee preserved at the HAEU, which covers presently the period from its establishment in 1958 to 1982. The main themes addressed in the ESC documents for the year 1982 relate to employment, social security, tourism, agriculture and fisheries.

The documents shed light on different issues pertaining to social security in the different EEC countries and on the EESC initiatives in this context, including proposals to introduce measures on health and security in workplaces and the establishment of a study group on temporary employment. They also illustrate the first steps taken towards the development of a common tourism policy at the European level in the 1980s.

Agriculture and fisheries is another important aspect of the EESC work in that period. The files thus include various proposals concerning pricing certain agricultural products as well as reports on the situation and perspectives of the Communities’ fishery policy and with the cooperation of Spain, Portugal, the French overseas territories and Greece.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), established in 1958 by the Treaty of Rome (EEC), is an advisory body of the European Union composed of representatives of workers’ and employers’ organisations and of other interest groups including consumer and environmental organizations. The EESC historical archives are deposited and preserved at the HAEU according to the EESC Bureau decision of its 285th meeting (24 September 1985).
