Guidelines for Traineeships

  • The purpose of the traineeships is to facilitate, not delay, completion of the doctoral thesis and participation in them is considered an integral part of the EUI doctoral programme.
  • Researchers wishing to take up these opportunities must have the full support of their academic supervisor, their department and the approval of the Entrance Board.
  • Once the traineeship has been approved by the Entrance Board, researchers must be regularly admitted to the successive year of study – the year in which the stay abroad will take place.
  • No traineeship may take place while a researcher’s status is suspended or his/her admission is deferred.
  • Candidates selected will be those whose motivation to participate is clearly and convincingly formulated as an important link in the degree completion process.
  • It is generally accepted that the best period for taking part in any such scheme is towards the end of the second year of study, or in the early phase of the third year, thus allowing sufficient time for writing up one’s thesis.
  • It is important that all the deadlines and conditions stated in the relevant traineeship pages are strictly observed.
