EUI LAW alumna Marta Cartabia has made history by being the first woman elected President of the Italian Constitutional Court.
Dr. Cartabia was elected on the 11th of December 2019 with 14 out of 15 votes in her favour, as she herself abstained from voting.
She will hold the office until the end of her mandate on the 13th of September 2020. Dr. Cartabia was first appointed to the Constitutional Court as a judge in 2011.
The Constitutional Law professor obtained her Ph.D. from the European University Institute in 1993 and has maintained a strong relationship with the Institute throughout the years.
President of the EUI, Professor Renaud Dehousse said: 'It is a privilege and honour for the EUI to count Professor Marta Cartabia amongst its alumni as she becomes the first woman elected as President of the Italian Constitutional Court. She is an active member of the EUI community and has followed closely its strategic development, most recently as a member of the EUI Strategic Review Committee in 2017-18'.
Dr. Cartabia has also been a distinguished lecturer for the EUI's Academy of European Law’s Summer School on European Union Law.
She took part in the 2016 The State of the Union Conference on women in the world, speaking on the Women in Leadership panel.
