How to read the course code: language levels

The EUI Centre for Academic Literacies and Languages (CALL) uses the Council of Europe Framework (CEFR) to indicate the levels of the courses. A1 indicates a beginners' level; C2, advanced or native speaker. For more information check: Language Levels and Placement Tests.

The course codes refer to the approximate CEFR levels of the group at the beginning and at the end of the course as in the key below:

100

200

300

400

500

600

A1-A2

A2-B1

B1-B2

B2-C1

C1-C2

all levels, although there may be a threshold limit indicated in the course description

Course codes with a decimal point, e.g. A2.1, indicate the progression of the course through the year:

A typical course would look like this:

A2.1    First stage :         October- December

A2.2    Second stage :   January - March

A2.3    Third stage:        April - June

Some courses begin at different moments in the year, so if you see a course in January marked A2.1, this means the course has just begun; or if you see a course in October marked A2.2, this means the course began in September.
