German 601: Academic reading strategies


This workshop addresses researchers who want to improve their reading skills in German for academic purposes (Deutsch als Wissenschaftssprache). The workshop is open to learners who have completed the A2 level up to level B2.

Certain contents of this workshop such as general reading strategies, reading techniques regarding special phenomena of the German language and typically academic structures will be introduced to the whole group, while the practice oriented contents will be designed according to the participants’ language levels and their fields of research.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop students will

  • be more efficient, active and critical readers in German
  • be able to read, assess and process original academic texts at the respective levels
  • scan research material in order to assess its usefulness
  • be more confident in their perception of German academic texts

Contents

  • Materials are provided by the German teacher. 
  • Additionally the participants are asked to bring in material relevant to their own research.
 

The workshop includes work on the following:

  • General and language specific academic reading strategies
  • Linguistic knowledge and schemata strategies
  • recognizing academic hedges and conventions
  • Meta-cognitive awareness
  • Use of dictionaries and corpora databases

Learning methods and activities

Activities in and out of class include:

  • self-observation: how do I read (German) academic texts?
  • training your academic reading strategies by controlled reading exercises
  • testing and reflecting different strategies
  • working with dictionaries and corpora databases
  • reading without dictionaries (?)
  • observations and discussions

Märchenstunde mit Grimms Märchen

Do you want to read German literature?

Do you want to escape for a while into the realms of fantasy and imagination?

Is your German language level somewhere between A1 and A2?

Then join the workshop to read, discuss and enjoy the fairy tales of the brothers Grimm.

Contents

Workshop materials are provided by the German teacher.

 

 

The workshop includes work on the following:

  • a brief introduction into the “Romantik”, the brothers Grimm and the idea to collect fairy tales and put these oral texts into a written form
  • reading selected texts
  • discussion, interpretation and creativity

  • Einstieg in die Ästhetik der deutschen Romantik
  • Lektüre: Adelbert von Chamisso Peter Schlehmils wundersame Reise
  • Diskussion, Interpretation, Kreativität
