Programme Description
The Academy of European Law (AEL) holds two summer courses each year on The Law of the European Union and on Human Rights.
The 2026 course on The Law of the European Union will be held both in presence and online on 15 – 26 June 2026.
The topic of the General Course for 2026 will be From Brexit to Breakthrough: The European Union’s Unlikely Renaissance. Professor Katerina Linos will examine how, despite coming close to collapse after the economic crisis, Brexit, and the mishandling of the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis, the European Union has rebounded following the COVID-19 pandemic with new initiatives across multiple policy fields, new sources of funding, and new modes of governance. In her course, Professor Linos will address the central puzzle of how the EU has managed to generate solidarity to underpin these initiatives in a continent lacking a shared national identity.
The theme of the Specialized Courses, which will be given by a group of leading experts in the area, will be European Union Law and Social Conflict. Amongst the issues to be examined will be how EU law interacts with and responds to social conflict, addressing questions of equality, justice, and the mobilization of law in the face of societal divisions.
A Distinguished Lecture, entitled The Reawakening of Europe, will be given by Anu Bradford, an expert in the field of EU law
The lecturers will include Professors Loïc Azoulai, Floris de Witte, Raphaële Xenidis, Hanna Eklund, Ioannis Kampourakis, Virginia Passalacqua, Giacomo Tagiuri, and Nozizwe Dube.
