By the end of the course, researchers will:

  • Transform a draft into a journal article that meets publishable standards, demonstrating mastery of discipline-specific conventions
  • Adopt and maintain a structured writing routine that enhances productivity
  • Apply techniques for improving article structure, argumentation, and evidence presentation.
  • Target their writing effectively to meet the expectations of specific journals and academic discourse communities.

Course contents

With the needs of early career academics firmly in mind, the aim of this course, inspired by Wendy L. Belcher's Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks (Sage, 2009), but also drawing on other materials, is to get a journal article into publishable form. The sessions address both rhetorical and stylistic issues related to drafting and revising your article.

The aim is to get a journal article into publishable form, so you need to be able to commit to the entire length of the course.

You will profit most from this course if you already have an article on the go and ready to be revised.

You will need to set aside a significant amount of time between each session (approx. 5+ hours) in order to work on your article.
