Environmental Certification

Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)

The EUI has reached a major milestone in its commitment to environmental sustainability: the achievement of both ISO 14001 certification (July 2025) and EMAS registration (March 2026) across its Environmental Management System (EMS).

This result marks the conclusion of approximately four years of structured work, collaboration, and continuous improvement involving multiple services and stakeholders across the Institute.

A milestone in environmental commitment

The implementation of the Environmental Management System represents a strategic step in strengthening the EUI’s approach to environmental responsibility. Through a systematic framework of planning, monitoring, and performance evaluation, the Institute has integrated environmental considerations into its daily operations and long-term development strategy.

The simultaneous achievement of ISO 14001 certification and EMAS registration reflects the robustness and maturity of the system implemented:

  • ISO 14001 (July 2025) confirms that the EUI’s EMS meets internationally recognised standards for environmental management systems.

  • EMAS registration (March 2026) goes a step further, demonstrating not only compliance but also a strong commitment to transparency, public reporting, and continuous environmental performance improvement under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme.

EMAS registration scope and validity

The EMAS registration covers all 17 sites included in the EUI Environmental Management System, ensuring a unified and coordinated approach to environmental management across the entire institution.

The registration is valid until 2028, subject to periodic verification, and confirms the EUI’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high environmental standards and continuously improving its environmental performance.

A collective achievement

This accomplishment is the result of sustained collaboration across the Institute, involving administrative services, technical staff, researchers, and external experts. Over the course of four years, the EUI has progressively strengthened its environmental governance, improved operational efficiency, and embedded sustainability principles into its institutional culture.

Looking ahead

While this dual certification represents a significant achievement, it also marks a starting point for further progress. The EUI remains committed to:

  • Reducing its environmental footprint
  • Improving energy and resource efficiency
  • Strengthening sustainable procurement practices
  • Enhancing awareness and engagement across the community
  • Continuously improving environmental performance across all sites

The Institute will continue to build on the foundations established through its EMS to ensure long-term, measurable progress towards environmental sustainability.
