This dynamic debate on citizens' assemblies is the first event in the Debating Democracy series organised by the Young EUI Democracy Forum. It is an opportunity to get involved and share your thoughts on participatory democracy.

Democracies increasingly face both exogenous and endogenous crises. Subsequently, citizens are losing trust in their elected representatives, so they are finding ways to express their dissatisfaction and get involved more directly. A deliberative approach to democracy offers citizens’ assemblies as one of the options. For this event, the members of the YEDF will engage in a lively one-on-one debate to explore both positive and negative aspects of this approach. Please register to watch the debate, listen to opposing views on citizens’ assemblies, reflect on it and share your views in an open discussion afterwards. The event will be held in hybrid format but in presence participation is highly encouraged to enable better engagement.

This event is organised by the Young EUI Democracy Forum (YEDF), an STG group that engages in issues of the restriction of civic space in Europe, the disconnection between decision-makers in Brussels and EU citizens, inequalities, and the relationship between the EU and the broader international community.
