This chapter argues that the institutional frameworks of European health systems have been shaped by centuries of political development and, in particular, by critical turning points in state and regime formation. The most recent of these is the breakdown of the Soviet Union and consequent double transformation from state-socialism to capitalist democracy in Eastern Europe. The talk will outline the impact of this series of challenges and crises on contemporary health systems and discuss the post-1989 transformation of East European health systems.
