A battle of definitions: green finance, climate finance, sustainable finance, and more

This panel discussion hosted by the EUI Finance, Innovation and Business Regulation Working Group brings together three PhD researchers investigating different interpretations of "green finance", "climate finance", and "sustainable finance". The panellists will each begin by introducing the specific kind of "finance" they consider in their research; this will be followed by a discussion about the linkages and differences between these terms. Contributions and questions from attendees will also be welcomed.
Terms such as "green finance", "climate finance", and "sustainable finance" are now commonplace. Yet, the precise definitions and distinguishing features of these terms can be difficult to identify. These forms of finance are governed by a jumble of legal and regulatory frameworks, from international treaties to domestic laws and non-binding soft law. The seemingly arbitrary and interchangeable use of these terms in popular discourse exacerbates an already confusing situation. It is important to unravel this complexity because these forms of finance impact (and are shaped by) a wide range of actors and institutions including international organisations, national governments, businesses, and civil society at large. It is hoped that this event will allow participants to gain a better understanding of the landscape of these "new" approaches to finance, including an understanding of their constitutive legal frameworks, the actors involved, and the concerns addressed by each form of finance.
