Join this session of our MWG that will delve into the dynamics of immigrant integration and the role they play in the communities they arrive to.

The first paper discusses exile as an integral part to the history of early modern migration. The periodical presence of Crimean dignitaries on the Ottoman island of Rhodes sheds light on the interdependence of imperial elites, and the exile’s impact on their locations of banishment. The second paper focuses on return migrants, specifically Japanese postwar repatriates, and the (re)integration process and outcome in their home communities. Using survey data to map socioeconomic outcomes, the research attempts to identify where challenges might emerge in a context where majority and minority groups are most similar.

Fabian Riesinger, PhD Researcher at the EUI Department of History (HEC), will present the paper Detained on an island: The habitual banishment of the Crimean Khans to Rhodes and Madiha Z Sadiq, PhD Researcher at the EUI Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS), will present the paper Return Migration and (Re)Integration: the Manchuria case.
