We welcome Laurence Boone, the French Minister of State for Europe since 2022 and formerly Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Economist of the OECD, to discuss her views on the future of Europe and whether the EU is “fit for the future.”

Europe is facing new and more demanding challenges. The European Union will soon have a new Parliament and a new Commission with a complex agenda that extends from global security and international trade, to institutional reform and enlargement. How the EU navigates and is prepared for such challenges, in terms of both structure and functioning, will determine whether the EU is fit for the future.

In this special event, we are delighted to welcome Dr Laurence Boone to discuss her views on the future of Europe and the opportunities and challenges the EU will face in the next few years. In addition to her keynote speech, the event will serve as an occasion for a dialogue with a panel of fellows and students from the EUI community, as well as the broader public (via an open Q&A from the live audience).

Laurence Boone was appointed Minister of State for Europe in the French government in 2022, after having served as Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Economist of the OECD. She has had a long and distinguished career in the public and private sectors. Her public service includes being appointed special advisor to the President of the French Republic François Hollande and French Sherpa to the G20 meetings. In the private sector, she has served as chief economist at AXA Group and at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. She holds a PhD in applied econometrics from the London Business School; an MSc in econometrics & macroeconomic modelling from Reading University; a master’s in economics from Université Paris X Nanterre and a postgraduate diploma (DEA) in modelling and quantitative analysis from University Paris X Nanterre. Laurence Boone has authored numerous articles and taught at the École Polytechnique, ENSAE (French National School of Statistics and Economic Administration), École Normale Supérieure (ENS) and Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs.

The event will be held in the Elinor Ostrom room at Palazzo Buontalenti, the premises of the Florence School of Transnational Governance, EUI. All are welcome to attend. Please register, indicating if you will attend in person or online. Please note that online viewers will not be able to participate in the Q&A.
