The Young EUI Democracy Forum (YEDF) is proud to announce its third event in the Debating Democracy series. Following discussions on citizens’ assemblies and artificial intelligence, we are diving into citizen participation in elections.

Levels of turnout in elections, whether national or for the European Parliament, can be a deciding factor in determining the outcome of elections. The last EP elections in 2019 saw the highest turnout since the 1990s. Yet, only 51% of European citizens cast their votes: why? In this event, we will explore the phenomenon of electoral non-participation, and go further to ask if the ballot box is indeed the central pillar on which democracies rest. In this way, we envisage discussions not only on non-voting, but also on extra-electoral forms of democratic exercise.

The members of the YEDF will engage in a lively one-on-one debate to explore opposing views on this topic. Please register to watch the debate, reflect and share your opinions in a discussion afterwards. The event will be held in hybrid format but in presence participation is highly encouraged to enable better engagement.

This event is organised by the Young EUI Democracy Forum (YEDF), an STG group that serves as a space for youth to engage with issues related to democracy worldwide by combining research, practice and open discussion.
