The STG Talks, held weekly at Badia Fiesolana and online, serve as a space for discussion for the STG community and beyond. Led by the STG Fellows, the talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking.
The 21st century is characterised by rapid urbanisation, increased rural-urban migration and a high rise in population. The main driver of rural-urban migration among other factors is energy poverty, a situation whereby a household lacks access to modern energy or cannot afford energy bills.
Energy poverty is a rising concern in both rural and urban areas, forcing people to resort to unsustainable energy practices. Africa’s largest population still do not have access to affordable and reliable energy resulting from unrealistic and poorly crafted or financed policies.
In this talk, the panel will discuss approaches that can be adopted to promote the development of climate resilient cities and communities while showcasing stories and case studies, with a focus on towns and cities and other regions with a high concentration of economic activities and population. The talk aims to examine possible climate finance mechanisms appropriate to Global South communities and evaluate development cooperation motives of key players and monopolies in energy production and supply such as Russia, EU, TotalEnergies and Shell Global.
In this regard, the discussion will further explore possible avenues that can be adopted by energy monopolies to significantly contribute to climate resilience and green transition, and provide realistic and tested recommendations to build and promote climate resilience cities and communities in the Global South region.
