This seminar will discuss how the European Union and its global action are perceived in the Global South, drawing on research developed across the EUI.

How are the European Union and its global action perceived by stakeholders in the Global South? What research avenues and policy implications can be derived from these findings? And what do these perceptions reveal about the EU’s own blind spots and Eurocentric assumptions?

Drawing on research developed at the Robert Schuman Centre on the Global Gateway (development finance), cultural diplomacy, EU-India relations, and the audiovisual sector, the speakers will discuss how the European Union is seen from the Global South and identify cross-sectoral patterns and tensions in the EU’s and global action. The seminar seeks to move beyond siloed, sector-specific analyses towards a more integrated account of how EU external action is read and contested from the Global South, without treating Global South perspectives as simply external assessments of the EU.

Those perspectives will be provided by Mafalda Dâmaso, Part-time Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre; Anissa Bougrea and Khushi Singh Rathore, Max Weber Fellows at the Robert Schuman Centre; and Nozizwe Dube and Rohit Sarma, Max Weber Fellows in the Department of Law.

At the EUI and the Robert Schuman Centre, we are dedicated to removing barriers and providing equal opportunities for everyone. Please indicate in the registration form your accessibility needs, if any. Alternatively, you can contact the logistics organiser of the event.
